I was visiting my best friend in San Diego and he tricked me into going to my first yoga class.
My teaching philosophy is to teach form over depth. From my years of practice I have learnt the importance from my great teachers of proper alignment. Spending several years training for Yoga competitions I was fortunate to learn from some of the best yogis in America. Through a dedicated practice of alignment you will increase your joints muscles and whole body to its maximum range of motion while strengthening in that full range and greatly reduce the risk of injury from practice. Yoga is hot and hard and your alignment is the most important part of my teaching.
I was hooked halfway through my first class. The teacher, the heat, the postures, all of it challenged me so much that I felt weak and unfit. Then I looked to my left and saw a very old woman practicing near me without any grimace on her face. I was convinced from that moment that this was a practice that will keep me healthy and getting the most out of life.
The heat. I smoked a lot when I first started practicing and my lungs choked in the yoga room. It made my heart work overtime and sweat like a pig. My addiction made it hard to stay standing throughout the whole class. With perseverance my practice helped me overcome my addiction and I gave up smoking several years ago.
My practice has been a great long road of self-discovery and empowerment, one with many pitfalls and mountains to climb. I started when I was 22 while I was building boats in Cape Cod Massachusetts. After six months, my studio owner invited me to the Advanced Class and three months later convinced me to compete inn a Regional Yoga Competition. I took first place that year for the state of Rhode Island. I started with a sore back, broken wrists, and was unable to touch my toes. After a year I straightened my spine one inch and could balance on one leg whilst holding my foot. Since then I have competed in several more Yoga competitions, placing 5th in the US 2011, and 13th in the world in 2013.
My goal with my yoga practice is to continue the longevity of my muscles and body operating at optimal condition, and to be able to walk up and down stairs with ease in my later years.
I can do the middle splits supported just by two chairs under each foot.
